St Louis Estate — Retirement community
Claremont | 550 sqm
Built in the late 1890’s, originally as a grand family home, the Hinemoa Homestead is the focal point of the St Louis Estate retirement community in Claremont. The building comprises reception, café, dining and social spaces, and Rezen Studio was engaged to assist with renovations that would enhance the amenity available to residents while preserving what remained of its significant heritage fabric.
Works included extensive exterior restoration such as re-roofing, exposing and repointing heritage brick and limestone walls, stucco work and structural upgrades. Internally, the aim was to create a calm, convivial atmosphere by maximising access to natural light and ventilation, and by celebrating heritage details both original and subsequent.
A soft palette of oak and travertine is used throughout, establishing an overarching design language that is readily distinguishable from the original features while sitting comfortably within the heritage fabric.
